Faculty, Program/area of study
Faculty of Education, Secondary Education Program

What do you like/love about your program?
I love that I can be a lifelong learner in this field.

What are your interests/passions/hobbies?
I’m really interested in watching and analyzing movies, listening to music in different languages and different genres, reading, hiking, and I absolutely love making things. Whether the things I make are sculptures and poems or baked and cooked foods for others, I love it.

Do you have a talent or amazing experience to share?
That’s a hard question because even the simplest of things can be an amazing experience. For instance, when I was in Korea, apart from being in Korea itself being an amazing experience, I learnt about a shared interest in films with a Korean University student. This was on the last day of being in Korea and yet a simple conversation about new movies and about movie recommendations turned out to be a moment that puts a giant grin on my face when I look back on it.

What is one helpful study technique that you use?
I'm more of the procrastinator kind of guy; however I find that steady quiet helps me get into a working mood. It's not absolute silence, and usually has something like a low hum or rustling in the background, that helps me focus on what I need to do. That, and the added pressure of not being well enough prepared.

What language(s) do you speak and write?
I speak and write English fluently, and right now I’m working on becoming fluent in urdu, a language spoken in Pakistan. I’m planning on learning French and Arabic as well this coming year. I have a plan that involves speaking with one friend for each language and slowly but surely getting from a slowpoke to a fluent master of words.

Describe yourself in 3 words
I am an introspective daydreaming goofball.

What do you like/love about your program?
Meeting likeminded individuals!

What are your interests/passions/hobbies?
Mental health and social equality advocacy, scientific research, nutrition, health care, microbiology, LGBTQ, psychotherapy.

Do you have a talent or amazing experience to share?
I love to share my personal stories involving mental health with others who are facing challenges as a source of hope. I had struggled with my own health in my first year, due to anxiety, grief over losing a significant relationship, and loneliness. And although the struggle is far from over, if there is one valuable lesson I had learned that I want others to remember, it would be this: moments of hopelessness are just that - fleeting moments. No matter how low you fall, no matter how deep you sink into despair, recovery is absolutely possible. It's okay to struggle. It's okay to forget who you are and what you are capable of. But just because you lose sight of yourself and cannot remember what you are capable of, doesn't mean those who love you (such as your friends) have also given up on you. Anything is possible! :)

What is one helpful study technique that you use?
Make exam-like questions and answer them.

What language(s) do you speak and write?
I can speak both English and Chinese (Mandarin), but I am much more fluent in English. With Chinese, I speak the basic language without much trouble, but do not know much slang or figures of speech. I can also send text messages in Chinese (Simplified), but that is about as far as writing and reading go.

Describe yourself in 3 words
Passionate, Affectionate, Candid.

What do you like/love about your program?
I like having a wide variety of courses to choose from in Bio Sci major, which has allowed me to try different subject areas that I hadn't taken before. I really like psychology because it expands on the why's and how's of human behaviour/nature, which is very interesting to learn about. It helps me understand myself and others around me.

I like going on road trips and exploring new places. I also love taking photographs of sunsets. I love getting lost in a good book once in a while.

Do you have a talent or amazing experience?
I can solve a Rubik's cube. My record time so far is about a minute.

What do you like/love about your program?
It's super flexible!

What are your interests/passions/hobbies?
Singing, eating and making food, so if you're lucky I might have cookies with me! (Who doesn’t love food and music though?). Mental health is obviously a passion of mine and I love a good story, whether it be from a friend, art or a show such as GoT, Lucifer, This is us or the CW network.

Do you have a talent or amazing experience to share?
The most surprising thing that happened to me last summer was that someone tried to recruit me for a beauty pageant…but anyone who knows me would know how out-of-place I’d feel at one. As for an amazing experience, I have an awesome friend with the same birthday as me, similar handedness, who also completed the same degree as me!

What is one helpful study technique that you use?
I talk out and self-explain my notes. While it helps me remember things, it’s also great for freaking people out, so I usually study at home.

What language(s) do you speak and write?
Fluently: English (even that’s debatable when I’m tired)
Partially: Mandarin, French

Describe yourself in 3 words
Derptastic, Non-judgmental, and a Work-in-progress.

What do you like/love about your program?
I love my program because of the diverse scopes of work our researchers do at the UofA. It is amazing to meet so many awesome people in the past few years and have the opportunity to work with them. Over the course of my undergraduate program, I had the chance to pursue my interest in research and have a taste in both plant genetics, cell biology and fly genetics. I was able to challenge myself and achieve personal growth.

What are your interests/passions/hobbies?
I love meeting new people and talk about the most random things in life. If I am not in the library, I am usually volunteering for different causes within the community. Outside from that, I like to do fencing, work out at the gym and learn Spanish. I also spend a good portion of my free time binge watching Netflix. It may not be the most healthy thing for your body, but different a good way to distress. Note: just remember to takes breaks and stretch.

Do you have a talent or amazing experience?
My most amazing experience was my decision to come to Edmonton for university. Sure, the weather is very different, but people here are so warm and welcoming, and it melts all the cold from outside. I met many friends and had a lot of great moments, and I would like to invite you to join me and make more great moments.

What is one helpful study technique that you use?
Know your limit and plan ahead of time. No, you cannot produce a 2000 words essay overnight and expect the quality to be decent. I am not the best role model on this either, I had procrastinated a lot and had spent many late nights in the library. But you can avoid that by learning from my mistakes.

What language(s) do you speak or write?
I am fluent in Mandarin and I speak very limited Spanish.

Describe yourself in 3 words
Calm, Patient, Welcoming.

What do you like/love about your program?
I didn’t expect to be getting a Psychology Degree. Honestly, I took a psychology course as an elective in my second year and found myself reading unassigned articles in my spare time. I thought that was a sign that I should pursue more courses in the field. The more courses I take, the more I am intrigued. I love learning about the human mind and behaviour as I want to better understand others and myself. In my program, I get to explore external and internal factors that shape who we are and become. I consider myself lucky to be studying what I love.

What are your interests/passions/hobbies?
People have hobbies while in University?! I’m joking (somewhat). In my spare time, I like visiting with my friends, my dog (Kiwi; a boxer mastiff) or my family. We like to eat at new restaurants, play board or card games, go fishing, shop, and try new activities like escape rooms or ax throwing. When I’m alone, I enjoy painting, making jewelry, creating flower arrangements but mostly watching Netflix. In between semesters, I love traveling! I love exploring new cities and learning about other cultures. Traveling with the people I love is probably my favourite thing to do!

Do you have a talent or amazing experience?
In 2012, almost two years after the horrendous earthquake, I was able to spend two weeks in Haiti. Most of my time was spent in a traveling clinic where we would offer free medical services to the community we were in. The wreckage of the natural disaster was still apparent but the thing that I will always remember is the strong sense of community between the Haitians. Regardless of their circumstances, they worked together and loved each other. It really put things in perspective and will be an experience that I will cherish forever.

What is one helpful study technique that you use?
I find it incredibly helpful to rewrite my notes in a word document. I categorize the topics and colour code the text. By categorizing the topics, I am able to see how ideas relate. By colour coding the text, I am able to further compress the information. For example, everything under the red heading is related to the heading, the blue topics are the main ideas in the heading and the purple words with their definitions are the most important terms within the topic. When I study the completed notes, I have highlighted what’s most important and find it easier to remember.

What language(s) do you speak or write?
English

Describe yourself in 3 words
Caring, Organized and Independent.

What do you like/love about your program?
I love learning about human behaviour. Learning about brain processes, functions, and how these neural networks work together to facilitate certain behaviours is so interesting to me. I love learning about unconscious processes and how they are constantly influencing peoples expressed behaviour. But what really excites me are lectures/courses geared towards interpersonal interaction. Interactions between people, and the underlying processes that drive these interactions, truly are what I love learning about in psychology.

What are your interests/passions/hobbies?
I have a very eclectic range of hobbies, but primarily they include something involving the mountains, music, or comedy. I love hiking, adore skiing (all kinds; downhill, cross country, and touring), and have very recently taken up bouldering. I play in the university symphony orchestra, and have been playing cello for the majority of my life! I also generally love a good folk jam. But comedy is my great love... laughing whether it be while listening to a good comedy podcast, re-watching one of my favorite TV shows, or just laughing hysterically with my friends.

Do you have a talent or amazing experience?
One amazing experience that I will always remember is the third time I undertook backpacking the Berg Lake Trail, a hiking trail around Mount Robson. After a full day of hiking and then staying the night, we did a day hike out of our campsite called Snowbird Pass, which is my favorite hike in the world so far. Its entirety is around the Robson glacier, and includes alpine meadows, mountain goats (usually), marmots, waterfalls, and ice field views. Sharing this experience with my parents and my best friend is something I will always cherish, and it is for sure a hike I will always come back to!

What is one helpful study technique that you use?
One study tip that has helped me survive university so far has been to find the perfect study buddy. In my second year I was able to discover the benefits of having a friend who is extremely driven, who also values a quiet study space, and who will force you to take breaks after studying for hours on end (which I also learned in my cognitive psych class, taking breaks is key!).

What language(s) do you speak or write?
English

Describe yourself in 3 words
Loony, Dependable, Sincere.
