English and a little bit of Shanghainese (it's real, I promise).

What do you like/love about your program?
I like how it involves solving problems for real life applications.

What are your interests/passions/hobbies?
I am a vegetarian and animal lover. I enjoy walking my dog. I also like to read, play & listen to music, go ice skating, and running in my free time.

Do you have a talent or amazing experience?
I enjoy meeting new people and hearing about their experiences. This is why I am a big fan of travelling. I have travelled solo to many different places and enjoyed the experience every time.

What is one helpful study technique that you use?
I believe in quality over quantity. It’s about how much work you get done in the shortest amount of time. I am also meticulous and plan out my study schedule every week.

I am fluent in English and Mandarin Chinese.

Describe yourself in 3 words
Laid-back, Optimistic, and Creative.

Faculty, Program/Area of study
Arts, Psychology

What do you like/love about your program?
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the program, I am able to choose from a wide selection of diverse courses that can build on my understanding of human behaviour. I can learn how the brain works and operates from both a biological and sociocultural perspective!

What are your interests/passions/hobbies?
I’m quite the movie buff! Whether it’s a relatively obscure indie flick or the most recent Hollywood blockbuster, I try to keep up with them as much as possible. I enjoy reading comic books and playing games at the arcade. You might also find me at the gym sometimes!

Do you have a talent or amazing experience?
During my visit to New York this summer, I had a chance to observe the breathtaking Manhattan skyline at night from the Brooklyn Bridge. I’ve also walked through Central Park/Fifth Avenue during heavy rain wearing flip-flops.

What is one helpful study technique that you use?
Just start! Even if you don’t have any major exams coming right up, you can always do some quick, bite-sized study sessions. Reading a few pages of the textbook before class or making flashcards right after class can help make studying for tests more manageable!

What language(s) do you speak or write?
English, Filipino, Japanese and some conversational French.

Describe yourself in 3 words
Outgoing, Empathetic, Friendly.

Faculty, Program/Area of study
Bachelor of Arts, Double Major in Psychology and Anthropology

What do you like/love about your program?
I love how well Psychology and Anthropology complement each other - they both provide deeper insights and understandings to the other, and build a stronger knowledge base to build off.

What are your interests/passions/hobbies?
I do enjoy reading, but with all the reading I have to do for my classes, I often prefer to cook or bake in my spare time.

Do you have a talent or amazing experience?
I completed an internship with the Office of the Student Ombuds.

What is one helpful study technique that you use?
For me, the hardest part is getting started. I find it helps to tell myself I am allowed to take breaks, but once I get going the stress of starting has worn off and I don't need as many breaks as I thought I would.

What language(s) do you speak or write?
English

Describe yourself in 3 words
Empathetic, Dedicated, Compassionate.

Melissa

Year of study

Faculty, Program/Area of study
Arts/Psychology Major, Philosophy Minor

What do you like/love about your program?
I love that being in arts psychology allows me to learn and explore both the social and scientific aspects of this program. I also find that being in classes like philosophy, I am learning to appreciate different people's opinions and views.

What are your interests/passions/hobbies?
If it were up to me, I would take off every chance I got to travel the world. I find that the best way to get to know and appreciate other people, is to immerse yourself into their way of life. There is so much of the world to see and I want to experience it all. I also enjoy reading books that force me to think, watching movies that make me laugh, and spending time with friends over a good meal. I love live music and concerts just as I love playing sports or dancing a night away with friends. Last, but certainly not least, I enjoy a good Netflix binge and blocking out any signs of outside life in favour of the fictional settings of my favourite shows and movies.

Do you have a talent or amazing experience?
This past June, I had the incredible opportunity to spend two weeks in Guatemala on a volunteer mission with Vida UofA. Every day, my team and I would be up at the crack of dawn to take scenic routes to rural areas of the country, where we would help doctors run free mobile clinics for locals. I was humbled by how different the Guatemalan culture is from mine, yet so similar at the same time. Not only did I get to travel around this beautiful country, I also go to see a glimpse of medicine and patient care, which I hope to pursue in the future.

What is one helpful study technique that you use?
I find flashcards helpful when studying for theory based concepts. They are great for quick review sessions on the bus, between classes, and those last few minutes before going into the exam. I have recently began making questions and answers sheets, a great tool for memorization and learning material quickly.

What language(s) do you speak or write?
I speak French, English, Kinyarwanda and a bit of Spanish.

Describe yourself in 3 words
Weird, Determined, Inquisitive.

Faculty, Program/area of study
Science, Biological Sciences and Psychology Major

What do you like/love about your program?
Being a Science student, I learned about the great necessity and importance of practice and failure - how these together with hard work interact to produce the skills necessary in attaining excellence in your field.  In addition, I love my program because of the highly supportive environment created by individuals who are truly passionate about what they do! I came across amazing opportunities in university that really fueled my interests and motivation in my studies — which would not be possible without the people who go above and beyond their duties to support the students and staff!

What are your interests/passions/hobbies?
Currently, I really enjoy being a research assistant at the Faculty of Medicine on campus (if any of you have questions in getting started in research - I’ll be happy to help!) Outside of school, I love to travel with my family, experimenting with different makeup looks, going to concerts, and having at home get together with friends!

Do you have a talent or amazing experience to share?
I enjoy singing in my church choir and I also play a little bit of guitar. After my first year at the U of A, I went on a trip for a housing project for families in Ecuador! In that same year, I helped organize a fashion show for an all sizes event with one of my student groups here at the U of A! :)

What is one helpful study technique that you use?
Making a realistic study schedule and committing to stick to it! Also, try making certain tasks automatic (e.g. always writing your pre-labs on a certain day and time no matter what) — it gives you more free time later on!

What language(s) do you speak and write?
Filipino, English, and Ilonggo (a Philippine dialect).

Describe yourself in 3 words
Bubbly, Passionate, Organized.
